Our 1998 VOW VI Beetle has an oil consumption problem, we fought a battle to have the engine replaced, hope the new one has had the problems corrected. Has anyone else had this problem with the engine in their Beetle?
As someone in the know these 2 litre vw petrol engines need to be checked religiously every 1000 miles for oil, as, until they are properly run in (15-20,000 miles) they consume oil at an alarming rate. You MUST also make sure that the correct grade oil is used for refilling as some vehicles are set up for 'long life' servicing and consequently have very high grade oil installed on manufacture. You should only top up with the correct oil. As to pursuing a claim against vw if your engine seizes, all I can say is that it is your own responsibility to check all fluid levels on your own vehicle as well as tyre pressures and tread depth etc. The oil warning light and buzzer also gives enough warning to avoid mechanical 'death'. Modern cars are incredibly reliable and, most, if treated with a little respect will serve faithfully.
