What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing yet, only has 10k miles on it.

General comments?

Given to me by parents. Must sell soon.

Ugliest thing on the road today.

Looks like a big bubble.

Sounds to me like you wanted your parents to give you a Mustang GT!!! I see nothing in your comments that indicates that the car has performed poorly...

There were many 1998 New Beetles manufactured in 1997. This site asks for the year the car was built for the listing, so any smart person that will look at the placard on their door jamb will know the date of manufacture. Now, concerning the person that wrote this review; you have to be one of the most ungrateful people I have ever heard of. If you didn't like the car, you should've just told your parents politely since they seem to have money to burn instead of advertising your "plight" to the rest of the world who struggles to afford a car like this. I happen to think that the New Beetle is a good-looking car, and I drive a BMW!

Sorry to disagree but the "NEW" VW BUG was available in 1995. I contacted VW during the time they were develpoing this new model for it's 1998 introduction. I paid a fat sum of money to VW for a "ONE AND ONLY" updated verson of the old bug in 1995. The purchase took place on June 9th 1995 (almost 3 and a half years before the general public was introduced to the new bug). The car looked just like the newer VW bug that came out in 1998. However the one I got had the old air cooled motor like the classic VW from the past. I guess VW had not developed the new motor for the VW BUG "VERSON 2" by spring 1995. The person I spoke to said they used an old motor they had laying around from when they made the original bug. The person I talk to said the motor was never used, and was as good as a new one.

Suspect the writer of the above comment "paid a fat sum of money" just to get one of the old Beetles that continued to be produced in Mexico through 2006. There is no way they could have adapted an old air-cooled engine that just happened to be "laying around" the factory to the front-mounted, front-drive configuration of the New Beetle.

Yeah just imagine the engineering cost for this one off. Sounds like a hoax to me.
