1999 Volkswagen Beetle review from Germany
"It's a V.W.-badged design icon"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Driver's side window switch broke at about 35,000 km.
It consumes a bit of oil every 5000 km.
General comments?
I like this car's unique image and design, both inside and out. The ride is a good compromise: it's comfortable without the grip or handling being affected. The two liter engine has plenty of torque. It's got very fine driving characteristics. Particularly good is the way it can be driven on country lanes. The torque and grip make for a nimble car that's as fun to drive as it is good to look at.
The interior functionality is well thought through: plenty of cup holders and those neat little 12v sockets are evidence of this.
