1994 Volkswagen Corrado 16V review from UK and Ireland

"A future classic"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front near side ABS sensor failed at 67000 miles.

Lambda Sensor failed at 69000 miles.

Temperature Sensor failed at 69000 miles resulting in poor cold starting.

Near side front CV boot split at 71000 miles.

Both front bottom arm rear bushes needed replacing at 71000 miles.

Needed near side front bottom ball joint replacing at 77000 miles.

Front fog light cracked, apparently a common fault, but not a major issue.

General comments?

I was originally looking for a cheap run about, but then I saw this Corrado advertised in the local paper and had to have it.

I've had the car for just over 18 months now and covered 16000 miles in it. Although there is a far few things which have needed attention the car is generally reliable for its age, its never let me down.

Most of the parts are no more expensive than the equivalent golf and if you have it serviced by a specialist VW garage it is fairly reasonably.

Performance is OK from the 2.0 16V engine and is quick enough for most people (it sound great too). It is a nice blend of performance and economy with 40mpg on long trips and about 30mpg around town. The ride is firm and gives great grip, it only becomes uncomfortable on really long drives.

The one big thing that makes this car expensive to run is insurance, at group 17 it is much higher than other cars with similar performance.

The interior is usual VW quality and is practical with a reasonable boot (although the back seats are cramped for adults).

Overall I really love this car and think the styling has stood the test of time. It's a nice blend of practicality and performance, although it was expensive for its age it is quite a rare car and holds it's value well, without doubt a future classic.
