1994 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 from UK and Ireland - Comments

"The best all-rounder? Definately the best VW ever made!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Generally the Corrado has proved to be very reliable.

It goes through oil, so you must keep a watching eye on the levels.

Front tyres do not last very long.

Front brakes do not last particularly long either.

General comments?

This car is fantastic!

Previous cars have included; a 306 XSi, Cavalier GSi, Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo (manual!) and a BMW 3 series coupe. Without a doubt the Corrado has been the best ownership prospect.

Not only is it reliable, but it feels just at home cruising on a motorway or attacking a country lane at full pace.

Be wary, front tyre choice is crucial. There is a lot of weight over those front tyres and theyhave a lot of power to put down. I have been caught out in the wet and would strongly recommend only using premium brand tyres.

The sound this thing makes is fantastic, a subtle throb when idling and below 3k, then as soon as the rev limiter passes 4k a glorious howl until the redline.

Although slated by some for 'powering the wrong wheels', it really is great fun to drive. There is just the right amount of weight to the steering and ride that you know exactly what is going on beneath you without jarring or crashing over bumps.

Until now, the longest I have owned a car is 6 months. I cannot imagine selling this car in 6 years. It really is such a good all-rounder, what could possibly replace it?

I rencently drove a Golf R32, which admittidly is a great car. It is fast, comfortable and refined, but there is something missing - to be honest, it has no soul. With the Corrado, you know exactly what it is doing, you work with the car. The R32 feels like a Playstation game, yes it is quicker than the Corrado, but ultimately it is not as much fun. It feels like the computers and gizmos are there to stop you from hurting yourself, but also stop you from enjoying driving the car.

I honestly believe the Corrado VR6 is the best VW ever made.

That's a pretty bold statement "The best VW ever made".

If you ask a Jetta owner he/she may say the Jetta is the "best" VW ever mane.

A Cabriolet owner might say the Cabriolet is the "best" ever made.

A VW traditionalist might say that the original Beetle is the "best" ever made.

Having owned a number of all of the above, I'll simply say

they are all very good in their own way. As to what is the "best"? I think that depends what your needs are

and what you are looking for in a vehicle.

Out of all the VW's I've owned over the years, my personal favorites? A '67 Beetle, a 2002 Jetta GLX VR6 Wagon, and a '93 Cabriolet Classic. All well-made, all fun to drive,

all with VW personality and character.

I'm glad your enjoying your VW!

I would just like to say lots of imports do not have the soul a corrado has. I've owned mustangs, a jetta and drivin in supras, wrxs, evo, and more and I pull myself back to want more from the corrado. With some mods, engine work and a turbo you have a 325hp +monster there is no other car like it. You can't buy the feeling of flyin, but and import or sports cars and their like wow what was that??? The sound is like no other, not even a r32 sounds that good... got a lil story, raced a civic turbo once from a stop light and we got to the next light and he said that spoiler is cool and I'm like right well walk around my car now because once again when we take off that's all you'll see is that cool spoiler... the end rip honda civic.

Just an addition to the review I wrote originally...

The engine that can be found in;

A Golf R32, an Audi TT V6, a phaeton V6, a Bentley Continental GT Coupe and even a Bugatti Veyron.

Are all essentially taken from the 2.9 VR6 design (admittedly with more valves and in the case of the Veyron & Conti have multiple blocks 'bolted' together with turbos!!)

Just goes to show that great designs last.

By the way - all this time on and I still LOVE it!

I have driven a Corrado - quite a few years ago now! My memory of the car is of it being a sublime handler - like it was on rails and the steering was fantastic. I so wanted one at the time, but alas could not afford to buy or insure one back then! I have since driven many VW group cars and to be honest they just don't press the same buttons. The Corrado is a car you drive - a bit like the mark 2 Golf Gti, rather than efficiently and clinically conveying you from A to B. Pity VW have stopped making cars like the Corrado and Mk2 Golf Gti.

The civic turbo must have been in reverse gear, cos a tuboed civic would leave a corrado standing.
