2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI from North America - Comments

"This is my first new car after about 35 used cars over the years, and I feel that I picked a winner"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well, I've only owned the car for two weeks but the things I noticed so far are the seats are a bit hard, hopefully they will soften up over time.

The folding down back seat is kinda awkward to manage having to remove the head rests, but when you've completed the job it's nice and roomy.

The lock/alarm mechanism is really cool, but it only operates at no more than about 20 feet away.

General comments?

I was actually going to the VW dealer to look at used Toyota's when I decided to test drive the Golf Diesel. I was so amazed, all the other cars I test drove after that did not compare.

This car totally holds the road even in a wind storm and the room inside is amazing.

Everyone I have talked to has told me I made a great purchase and the car will last me a long time, and that's good cause after it's paid off I want to still have a good car, not an expensive piece of junk.

Well, It's almost 2 years later and my views on the VW is somewhat different than before.

First of all the car it'self has been reliable and nice driving, however there are some things that made me decide to sell it...soon!

At 50,00km's I had to buy new tires as the so called "good year" they put on wore almose bald in normal highway driving.

Also at around the same mileage I had to replace the rear brake pads, the rotors would have been replaced as well if I hadn't noticed soon enough...remember, this car is practically all highway.

Now! The car has 67,000km's on it, one day I was looking back and noticed the headliner all across and down the side was stained with blue! It seems the rear washer is leaking inside the headliner. I went to the dealer thinking the expensive extended warranty would fix it and to my surprise the service department said after much discussion "The only thing that is covered is the faulty part and that is all" So I would have to pay for the new headliner and labour! Well, I told them what I thought of their VW and walked out. It was Hull Volkswagen by the way, DON'T go there! They don't care! This soposedly is a common problem and is still in the works with VW.

I was also told by the dealer that I would have 2 years of free oil changes, but to my surprise! They lied!

After all the fuss and dissapointments that went along with this "new" car I decided to sell the VW and go back to Toyota. At least with a Toyota I can fix things without having to have an electronic engeneering degree. And I don't like some half-whitt under the hood of my car either!

I am buying a 1995 Camry to replace my "new" VW.
