2000 Volkswagen Golf V5 review from UK and Ireland
"Expensive, but classy comfortable car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing has gone wrong with it, I'm pleased to say! (I should think not for the price.)
Slight niggles: Reverse gear has a tendency to be a bit sticky when starting from cold. Sometimes does not want to go in.
Hatch door needs a good hard shove, almost a slam, to close it. Often the display tells me it is open when I think it's closed! This is one of its few design faults in my view and ought to be addressed by Volkswagen.
General comments?
Good acceleration to get you past slowcoaches. The 2.3L engine gives that extra boost. Miles per gallon not too bad, considering engine size. The 6-CD changer in boot is a boon. The cup holders make me laugh when they pop out! Car feels safe and has good road-holding.
Warning: Have had the 'V5' chrome logo pinched off the radiator grille once already, costs £11 approx. to replace. Dealer said people take them to put on inferior Golf models! (Seems rather pointless.)
I believe dealers have reduced their prices now due to the new shape Golf pending.
