1986 Volkswagen Golf GTD review from UK and Ireland
"Best diesel ever"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Not many things have gone wrong however:
I have replaced the clutch twice.
Heater was replaced.
Some minor electrical faults (i.e. lights).
General comments?
This car has been seriously abused like no other car I have ever owned before.
It is the most reliable car I have ever owned (over 20 cars) and at the present time (1986 built) is doing 160 km/h for hours with no problems.
I bought the car in London as a left hand drive with no service history and with 3 owners for the past two years, previously imported from France where nobody knows how many people owned it before.
At the present time the car is in Romania where I am using it when in holiday. I have been in France, Germany, Austria, etc. without any problem at all.
I do not know if there is any improvement of the engine from new as there is no service history however I am amazed by the speed and reliability of this 17 years old car which convinced me to buy a later GT diesel model.
I would recommend it to anyone as the most economical, practical (hatch) and reliable vehicle available in £1000 range.
