My timing belt went at 58000 miles instead of 60000 miles.
My coil pack blew at 67000 miles and stranded me in the middle of a blizzard off some remote highway.
My coolant began to leak flange at 67000 miles.
My rear suspension began wearing out at 69000 miles.
I broke a shift cable at 70000 miles.
Overall, this is a great car inspite of the problems I have had. I would reccomend that anyone in the market for a used hatchback to consider test driving a third generation golf. The car is quick, releatively reliable, and great for gas mileage. Although repairs tend to be a bit costly, having a car this well built is worth it.
You waited way too long to perform preventive maintenance on the vehicle. Things like suspension or cooling system, should be checked every two years or 40000 kms. The timing belt also needs to be changed every 75000 kms or so.
