1998 Volkswagen Golf GTi review from UK and Ireland
"Fun and economical"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Passenger Airbag Dash Warning Light came on at approx. 25,000 miles and local VW dealer took at least three visits to identify a loose steering wheel connector as the fault, which was duly replaced.
Loss of power at 82,000 miles caused by faulty air mass meter, now replaced, but was diagnosed by local VW dealer as requiring new turbo fitted!
General comments?
Seriously quick car with adequate handling, although wouldn't want any more power without sports suspension and better brakes fitted.
Well thought out cabin oozing quality and class, like blue dials and instrument panel.
Outstanding fuel economy, up to 70 mpg if driven sensibly!
Overtaking becomes a breeze!
Poor headlights on both dip and main beam.
