1987 Volkswagen Golf CLS review from South Africa
"Incredible value for money"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Well, the water pump went, but that was quite easy to fix. Cost about R200 (+/ 20 quid) and was about a 15 minute job to remove and replace it with a new one. Uhm, tappet cover gasket also went, but that was easy to. Oh, an cv joints as well, but that was also no biggie. Shocks were good for about until I overloaded the car and drove about 4000 km's with it like that (road trip to motogp)
General comments?
Incredible performance for such an old car with so many miles on it. This 1600 Carb motor was no slouch, easily reaching 60km/h in 1st, 100km/h in 2nd, and 140km/h in 3rd, but you could push it to 160 if you really want to. By that time the engine is screaming, but after 40-000 k's more the motor still didn't show any signs the worse! I am being serious!. 4th can see you to 180km/h and 5th will let you cruise at that speed. Maybe 200km/h if you've got a following wind. 0-100km/h in about 8 1/2 seconds and 0-160 km/h in about 20 seconds. Stock standard by the way.
