"A quality piece of German engineering and design"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

No problems to report.

General comments?

Overall a great car with just a couple of minor niggles.

Performance is excellent, engine pulls like a train from about 1800rpm in all 6 forward gears. It is also very economical, I average around 53-54 mpg in everyday use although I have had over 60 mpg on a long run.

Car handles fairly well, but does have a tendency to crash and thump a bit if a pothole or a very rough road surface is encountered.

Seats are comfy and driving position is good and I've done long journeys with no backache etc. Boot space is adequate, but I did have to purchase a Thule roof-rack for my bike.

My only real niggles with this car are the road noise and I also feel that the build quality is not as good as previous Volkswagens I have owned as there's a couple of rattles from behind the dash.

I owned a 130 TDI in 2001 (51 reg) and was very impressed with its performance, economy and reliability. Compared with todays modern diesels (common rail) the PD units are a bit noisy, but even by todays standards no diesels can match the mid range perfomance of the 130 with a comparible price tag. This car has its faults (handling, build quality,) but in the real world you want a car that has good economy, performance and comfort. This car has the lot{
