1998 Volkswagen Golf review from UK and Ireland
"Goodbye VW hello Toyota"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Engine went into limp mode at speed, had mass air flow sensor replaced by VW dealer. Car went into limp mode again this time VW said the turbo needed to be replaced at a cost of £1200. Got second opinion (from another VW dealer) and they replaced the road speed sensor. This fault is still ongoing.
Rattling sounds from engine. so far I have had:-
Suspension bushes replaced on top of front suspension columns.
Roll bar and roll bar bushes replaced.
Steering arms replaced... and the rattling continues
There is an electrical problem. When driving at night, using any switch IE windows, CD , sunroof etc. You can see a drain of power from the headlights or components will fail and the warning lights in the dash come on.
Had battery changed... fault continues.
General comments?
There have been a few times the car has performed well. But and it's a big, but, this car has been the worst car I have ever owned (and I have had bmw, Porsche, Alfa and Toyota) by a mile!
I would keep well away from the VW dealers, these cars and there common problems seem like a license to print money !
