2005 Volkswagen Golf GT TDI from UK and Ireland - Comments

"Superb car, great drive, good looking and comfortable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Creaking noise from steering column when manoeuvring at parking speeds. My local VW dealer, Motor Services of Bath reports that other cars recently built have the same problem and are waiting from VW for a fix for mine and other similar cars, this was confirmed by VW customer service. A minor annoyance, but does not overshadow my enjoyment of the car.

This car replaces a 1.9 TDI Sport which had to be returned to VW as it had a fuel-related problem that could not be resolved, however the dealer (Reg Vardy of Leicester) was extremely helpful and cooperative and provided a good deal on a new 2.0 TDI to end the "saga" - despite VW themselves refusing to provide any financial assistance or a fix for the problem.

General comments?

Extremely impressive car, a real improvement over the Mark 4 (I had a GT TDI 130BHP for 3 years) in terms of comfort and as a drivers' car. Ride and handling superb. The 2.0 TDI engine is excellent, powerful, responsive and refined. A joy to drive and perfect for long distance driving.

Plenty of room in the cabin and boot area - again a significant improvement over the Mark 4. Lots of clever features like the ambient red lighting for the interior and also like the removable bottle opener that comes with the armrest.

Car looks great - took a while to get used to the look of the Mark 5, however has really grown on me. Really needs 17" wheels to fill the huge wheelarches, however rides better on the standard 16" wheels.

Cabin quality good - most of the materials used are high quality (even if not quite to the standard of those in the Mark 4), much improved over earlier examples of the Mark 5 Golf that I drove so seems to be going in the right direction.

All in all, glad I chose and stuck with the Golf - will definitely have another (looking forward to the upcoming 170BHP diesel version).

If I'd had a car with an unresolvable problem, the last thing I would do is hand over another penny to the same manufacturer, but I guess we're all different.

You must really like VW's.

I've had my Mark V GT TDI for a couple of weeks now and I'm really impressed with it; Except for (1) The creaks other people have reported coming from the dash at parking speeds and (2) Difficulty finding diesel pumps that fit! I seem to spend my life filling the tank at a snails pace and would be interested to know if anyone else has found the same problem. These are niggles really and apart from that it's fantastic.

I've had my GT TDI for 2 years now. Done a bit over 30K mile and here are my thoughts...

The quality is just not there. I have had the following problems:

Drivers seat movement broken (2 dr)

Paint coming off the steering wheel plastic

Bad electrics for the rear wiper - requiring ignition to be reset

Traction control refusing to turn on! requiring ignition to be reset

discoloration of wheel nut covers on alloys.

Other points to note.

Tyres noise excessive on the Grand Prix wheels

- tiring on long journeys

(still better than the A3 crashy ride though)

Suspension good, but traction control ESP too aggressive.

Number 1 problem. Dealer network is appallingly rude! Service staff incompetent and customer service - what is that?

Would I still buy it over the A3 again - yes because its still the better car. But you can tell its built to a price!

Has anyone a solution to this problem.

Volkswagen Golf TDI. 1.9 110bhp. yr 1999. Key is inserted in ignition, turned on,little symbol flashes and engine fires up and dies instantly. Fault is irregular, sometimes goes for weeks other times happens twice a day. Found that leaving ignition turned on for 10 - 30 minutes until light stops flashing and then car will start. Have paid £95-00 to be told diagnostic computer says there is no fault.

To the person with the ignition fault - it's probably the sender unit on the immobiliser. You can normally get round it by taking the key out and then back in and turn to the "ignition on" position... you may have to do this a few times to fix it, but the light should stop flashing. Longer term you need a new sender unit - but they're not that expensive

Hi, I have just bought a Golf TDI GT 3 door 2005. It had done 50km and at first it was a dream. I only had it 3 days - then things started to go wrong.

Driver's seat belt warning light came on then off! Then came on when I went round right hand turns.

Window drivers side faulty.

Passenger seat would not slide forward when I popped open the bonnet. It would not close again, and this was a VW Approved car.

I took it back on the 30/09/09, and still waiting for them to fix all the problems. They said they would phone me 05/10/09, but it`s nearly 12 noon and still no phone call.
