1999 Volkswagen Golf comfortline review from Iceland

As expected with used cars there were some minor wear and tear on it when I got it, like some minor rust problems and chipped paint.

The car started to burn colossal amount of oil shortly after I bought it, so the engine was taken apart and the guys at the garage told me that something (don't remember exacly what) had broken and given the oil an open route into some of the cylinders. Fortunately I bought the car from a respectable dealer and this was covered in the warranty.

That brings us to the gearbox, which apparently is not the best VW could have fitted this car with. The gearbox housing cracks easily under pressure so I'm now on my second gearbox, which by the way is not cheap. I know people who are on their 3rd and 4th gearbox.

The cigarette lighter doesn't work, and the red light on the passanger door won't go off, even when the door is closed.

It's a brilliant, solid and sporty little car. Even though it's only 1,4liters it feels like a 2litre sportscar. The acceleration is very good for an engine this sise and you can easily drive this car to a top speed of 190km/h. And even at 160km/h it corners like a champ.

The interior is nothing to yell hurray for, but its comfortable and looks allright and is not as dull and boring as in many of the rivals.

The original CD player and speakers are rubbish, so I recommend that you uprade the sound system if you want to listen to quality music at high volume.

Its got so much space on the inside you can easily put four grownups and 50kg of luggage in it and still everyone is comfortable. I'd like to make a note of it though, that fuel consumption goes up by at least 60-70% when the car is fully loaded.

In comparison to other popular hatchbacks, like Ford Focus, Toyota corolla, Honda Civic, and alikes, this is simply the best of the bunch.
