General comments?
The Golf is an extremely reliable car. I bought mine for 500 quid, OK I have had to replace the exhaust and suspension (both of which were replaced with performance parts) and it was only running on 3 cylinders till I had the valve seats replaced (cost 500 quid inc labour). I replaced the standard interior, which was beige with grey carpets, with a GTi interior, including seats, door cards and carpet (bucket seats + black carpet.
It has never broken down on me, and starts first time every time in all conditions (even when it was only running on 3 cylinders)
Standard ride is extremely comfortable, if a bit nautical round corners, brakes are poor, and steering is extremely heavy. Fuel economy in mine ranges between 30-35 mpg.
The 1.3 engine is seriously underpowered, struggling fully loaded, and the 4 speed 'box means the car is excessivley noisy on the motorway.
I like the golf, but wouldn't buy another 1.3 4 speed, go for a 1.6 or 1.8 with the 5 speed, or the GTi if you can afford the insurance :D.
