1996 Volkswagen Golf VR6 review from UK and Ireland
"Great, but only for light, low mileage use"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
General wear and tear.
General comments?
Owned many other VW's now, mk2 syncro, mk2 TD, mk3 TDI, mk3 1.4, mk4 PD150, Passat 1.8T, and this is one I wanted to try.
The car is nippy, not what you'd expect from a 2.8 V6 in a relatively light body though, however it does a pretty steady 28mpg which is what i'd expect of 2.0 engines driven in a similar manner.
As every other review will state, the chassis can't really handle the corners too well despite the ample grip, it bounces and rolls quite badly.
Understeer is only present in the wet, and only if you attempt to accelerate in a low gear, with slight oversteer if you lift even the slightest amount.
I do like the steering - it has just the right amount of weight, and the brakes are strong.
Running costs are generally quite bad, quite a few niggly things seem to go wrong and coupled with high insurance and low mpg it is not a cheap car to run. It never fails to start though which is the most important thing.
