1995 Volkswagen GTI GTi-Vr6 review from North America

I've have had two major problems with this car, but the only person to blame is myself as I was attempting to perform repairs.

1. Installing a CD player: I did the install just fine (so I thought) and had no problems for 6 months and then one day smoke began to come from the dash. Smoke bellowed out for about 20 seconds and I was forced to pull the car over and jump out!!! After the smoke cleared I returned to the car to find that it wouldn't start. I had it towed to the local dealership. After a brief look at my car they realized that the entire (all 10 or 12 networks) wire harness would need to be replaced!! It cost me $1500 parts/labor.

2. Heater Core: Same deal here too, I had my Bently manual and a variety of tools and got started. About four hours into it I realized that I was in way over my head. Problem is... by this time the driveway was full of parts (steering wheel, dash board, center consule etc.) and I had to put the car back together just to get to work the next day. I found a shop that would do it and what would've been a $600 job (which I had in my account) had I let them do it from the start became a (you ready for this? cause I wasn't) $2200 experience!!! Needless to say I no longer work on cars myself.

On the brighter side this car is very quick and has a great sleep element about it. But the car being quick isn't the only good thing about it. The engine is extremely flexible. If I'm on the freeway and need to pass someone I don't need to even touch the gearshift... instead I just step into it and she goes like stink!! Light to light challenges are fun too.

Another great thing about the car is that by the time I bought it there was a host of tuner parts already on the market and I've upgraded everything from the suspension to the intake. This really was an important car for Volkswagen.
