1997 Volkswagen GTI review from North America
"Other than poor wiring system, great looking and awesome driving city car!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The only problem that a had with this car was the door handle. the key chilinder on the driver side got broken. after got replaced, for $50 entire door handle it works fine. recently, the passenger door handle got broken two, but I don't use that side, so i dont getting it fixed.
There are some minor cracks, tears and wears inside the cars, but other than that everything is fine.
General comments?
This is fairly built car, the german engineering is the best one. the only issue that vw facing are the electrical components. because that car was assembled in Mexico it tend to have poor wiring system.
The engine that I have is 2.0l, with roughly 115hp. the strong and positive side of this engine is its torque. it has low torque which help city drive, of the start. for people that are looking to get this kind of golf, do not expect to get as fast car as vr6 is, but reasonable car which can save you some money of gas and insurance.
The car handles fine, it has very smood and well controled transmittion.
I put a couple of mods on my car. first thing I did was the lowering suspension, fk springs and struts. next this was intake and the 2.25" straight pipe with magnaflow exhaust. borbet type A 17'rims, which are by the way of one the best looking rims for golf. also FK power headlights (mkiv look) and eyebrows, vr6 spoiler.
The car looks very sharp and everywhere I go people like to stop by and to check out the car. in one word it looks amazing.
Many young people drive people they want to look different and to be unique. you don't need to put a lot into these cars to look even better, but most importantly they last forever.
Comparing to honda's, golf has much better style, better hp and torque ratio.
The junk yards for VW in Toronto are very easy to be found and the parts for these cars. of of them is The source and the other one is frisco, etc.
