1998 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

1998 = Most Reliable Jetta Ever. Better than the newer models!

Faults:

The only repair I have had to make on the car is the exhaust has rusted out... but hey, it was 9 years old when that happened.

Just basic maintenance I guess. Nothing has really gone wrong..

Oh the molding on the doors has fallen off. I fixed it myself.

Door locks freeze in extreme cold weather sometimes.

General Comments:

Super reliable. I live in the city and commute on the subway, so I only really use it on the weekends. This is actually the most reliable car I have ever had, and the longest I have ever kept a car. I will keep it as long as I can.

It is amazing on gas! $15 a week gets me by.

Faults:

I just bought a Jetta. It has 208,000 miles and runs like brand new.

Never had a clutch replaced. It needs one now, but still works.

The guy told me when I bought the car that it does not like the rain and to change the wires... Well today it rained and it would not start, so I checked this forum and read about the WD-40; unbelievable, started right up, what a great trick.

Well so far this car seems to be a great buy with the mileage it has, and everything on the motor is original except the timing belt..

Summary:

Great, reliable car!

Faults:

Side panels on doors fall off after a while.

General Comments:

The car handled great, and could turn on a dime. The sun roof made it very light in the car. Fun car to drive, and not many problems. Very reliable if serviced regularly.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta GT 2.0 from North America

Summary:

This car doesn't deserve my opinion!

Faults:

First things first, the electrical system on these cars in a total nightmare. Not only has almost every sensor thrown a code since I had it, most of them have failed completely. The ignition loves to periodically fail resulting in poor starting and running performance.

The exhaust was new when I purchased the car. That has now rusted the entire way through and the muffler looks like Swiss cheese. I can't tell you how many times I've had to get under there and tighten up the clamps to hold my rust together.

General Comments:

Overall my opinion on Mark III Volkswagen's is there a total waste of money and one of the most unreliable cars out there. It's a joke to think their anything worth to modify. Please anyone out there considering one beware you need very deep pockets to keep your wheels on the road. Never did I have a problem once with my Korean made Hyundai. From now on its Japanese all the way.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

I love it

Faults:

I purchased my Jetta GLS and within 5 years of owning the car I have replaced the brakes, engine fan, right ball barring and the wind shield wipers. Repairs always cost $500, but as a Jetta owner, it is expected.

General Comments:

I love my Jetta! This is the best used car in the family! I bought my Jetta in 2003 as my first car expecting it to be a beater! I hoped it would last me 3 years. I am sad to say I have inherited a new car and the Jetta is for sale. I originally paid $5,500 for the car and it is currently for dale for $2,900 with multiple callers at the reasonable price! I would purchase another VW in a no time. I even convinced my sister and friend to buy Jetta's!
