1998 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 gas from North America

Summary:

I love this car and look forward to spending time in it every day

Faults:

Starter failed and had to be replaced.

Ignition coil failed and was replaced.

Door locks sometimes fail.

General Comments:

This car gets great gas mileage. Between 29 - 35 with a gas engine!

Much more fun to drive than my Volvo. Shifting is a pleasure and not a chore; the car feels glued to the surface of the road.

The luggage room with the seat folded is phenomenal. The shape is square and usable, unlike a Mercury Grand Marquis that I rented to haul small furniture. We are currently making a move, and I stand in amazement as to what will fit in this car. Furthermore, it's highway road holding and handling are improved by the added burden.

This car has loads of personality and charisma. It's the first car that I've given a name (Herbie) - I tried naming my Volvo and it just didn't work.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg from North America

Summary:

VW service is terrible

Faults:

I bought my 1998 Jetta Wolfsburg edition new and after about 1 year every time I turned the steering wheel to the left the horn went off! Cost $700 for a "little part in the steering wheel"

General Comments:

Made the mistake of buying a Passat after the Jetta and it is an even bigger nightmare.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta 1.9 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Awesome, bulletproof, low cost transportation

Faults:

Check engine light was on when I drove car off the dealer's lot. I took it back and they replaced wiring harness and glow plugs.

General Comments:

My first tank of diesel fuel gave me 48 MPG. I achieved as high as 50.4 MPG. I was impressed with the torque and pulling power of the small diesel engine on hills. I did not have to shift down and the engine did not appear to "lug down".

I sold it to my daughter who lives in Minnesota, and it is continuing to give her trouble free transportation. I have watched these Jettas hold their value on eBay, and many with more miles have sold for more than the $6,000 I paid at my local dealer!

I originally bought the car to convert to run on used vegetable oil, which would eliminate the cost of fuel.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta GT 2.0 Liter from North America

Summary:

Fun to drive, but an expensive headache

Faults:

Engine swap at 98,000.

Struts twice.

Headlamp assembly.

Starter at 170,000.

Alternator at 170,000.

Clutch at 97,000 and 169,000.

Brake calipers 3 times.

Electrical is going at 183,000.

General Comments:

The car is a lot of fun to drive. It feels like you're driving a more expensive sports car. It handles very well and has a great look to it.

Unfortunately the cost of parts is ridiculously expensive. If you start to have major problems with your Volkswagen you may as well be driving a Porsche or BMW.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta K2 2.0L from North America

Summary:

Fun reliable excellent German car to drive!!!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this fine piece of German art. Has lots of power and love the k2 edition, alloy rims, heated seats. Handles very well, even at high speeds (180km/hr)

General Comments:

Has the same reliability as my old 1988 Volkswagen Fox 2dr Wagon. Had her for 7 years and hope to have the K2 just as long or more.
