I have a 2005 Jetta TDI wagon, have a bit over 60,000 km. on it now, and I love it! I take one annual long trip to the U.S. and once I get across the border the speed limits go up. I set the cruise on 130 kph and still get about 48 mpg (Imperial) on a 3,000 km. trip. Sometimes the speeds get up to 175 kph! I use Stanadyne fuel additives regularly, and find they improve fuel economy enough to pay for themselves, plus I have the added benefit of a cleaner, longer-lasting engine. Driving short trips around town in winter is the worst for fuel mileage, and I normally get in the low 40's then. One great car!
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT. You should have listened to the original dealer, it would have saved you $1,000. Diesels need to be driven, hard. I have had 5 diesels, drive it hard to prevent sotting, use Power-Service for every fuel stop and always use the proper oil, 505.1 (in this case).
GOOD LUCK!
After about 7 months I have about 11k miles on my 09 Jetta TDI. What a great car! My mileage varies between 33 and 45 (city, hwy). No issues so far.
I followed the manual for break-in instructions... wish I would have followed the directions on the TDI forum, which are more aggressive to yield a faster, better breakin (shift at 2500 with cold engine, 3000 with warm engine; avoid <1800 rpm range; don't "baby" the engine... firm acceleration... occasional hi rpm to red-line). Hope that the mileage improves over the next 50k.
40mpg is a little low. You must be doing a lot of short trips and a lot of city driving. It takes at least 3 miles for the engine to get up to its peak operating temp where it's the most efficient.
I own an 09 with 2k on it, and I'm already getting 42mpg and I am so happy LOL. This thing has tons of power and is super quiet. And there is no way there is soot built up in this engine already; the new low sulfur diesel just does not soot up like it used to.
