2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI review from North America
"Sexy, fun and everyone wants one, I'm a sucker"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My window fell in a rain storm just like another person on this site. When I took it into the dealer they first said, they'll probably do it for free because I just bought the car only 3 months ago, (it was previously owned, but under dealership warranty for 4 years as a second hand car for me). Then, the bill came and the owner of the dealership said he could reclaim only 60% of the bill and back charge it to VW so I would have to pay the rest which was to the tune of $100 canadian... then I sat there and waited for service and was complaining to another owner waiting for her car, and when the service dept. was done, the dealership told me that they made a mistake and it would be free. I felt very confused and ignorant to the fact that I had that item covered in my warranty, which I did not get a copy of when I purchased the car... but now after reading this site I see it was a defect in the model and year, and the window holders were recalled. The dealership never mentioned a word of that too me, but did say it was a common defect... I wonder if they saw this site and it kept them honest! The radio thing is currently my problem. My neighbour has the same car and told me the story of the radio going dead and having to change fuse 42, at the time I thought nothing of it, but now it happened to me and he told me about this site so here I am to say, look out! If you have a 2002 jetta, sounds like you're almost guaranteed to have these problems. I know nothing of the coil, and the other issues I've read, but I don't know a lot about cars, so I need to find a mechanic I trust to look into all these issue as preventative maintenance for me...that's the challenge with any car though. I love my jetta, I had a 1998 jetta before this 2002 and loved it even more, the old style of the body was much more attractive. Now they just look like every other bubble car of the new millennium; honda, toyota, etc. I think saab kept it real with their style so maybe next time I'm trading up my car I'll be able to afford a saab by then! One thing I will say for VW, they did a good job with marketing the peace love notion, seems every hippie out there owns one, plus.... mine is diesel and is much better on gas, but really is designed for slow riding, anything over 100klm/hr and you're really wasting the purpose of having a deisel...also, what a bugger to start in the cold... gotta plug it in in canada!
