2000 Volkswagen Jetta GL review from North America

Power window went out at about 50,000 miles. Replaced by dealer at no charge because of history of failure. They also replaced the passenger side power mechanism at no charge to prevent any future problem.

Replaced some type of sensor at no charge at about 40,000 miles, (it kept making the "check engine" light come on.)

The coolant temp. gauge only works intermittently, but I have not bothered to fix it.

On the positive side, I just had the front brakes checked yesterday, and they STILL don't show much sign of wear at 67,000 miles! I am impressed. I did replace the rear brakes at about 57,000 miles.

I have loved this car since the first time I drove it. It has a lot of power for the small displacement - very "torquey" and fun to drive - yet it gets right around 30 mpg. It does require premium gas however.

We "tailgate" a lot, and the trunk holds an amazing amount of stuff. People cannot believe all the stuff we get in there!

I have heard of others having problems with the Jetta, but I think it is mostly with the 2.0 non turbo.

Let's put it this way: my other car is a Porsche, but I still enjoy driving the Jetta. Passing (say going from 50 to 70 mph) does not even require downshifting. The 1.8 turbo really has some torque!

This car is still as tight as a drum. No squeaks or rattles.
