"Jetta: why lemon laws were created"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

During low speeds or gear, my Jetta will randomly (about once every 3 weeks or so) start jerking, resulting in a complete shut-down of the car. The ABS and engine lights turn-on. This happened recently on the San Francisco Bay Bridge. Luckily, I was near Treasure Island and was able to pull over, but it really scared me. Thank goodness, my kids weren't in the car or something else like that. I have all those other problems have, but have not heard about this one yet.

General comments?

I think this might be the biggest lemon ever made. I bought into the marketing hook, line, and sinker. I will never buy a Volkswagen ever again.

It seems that all VW's except for that first aircooled generation are junk, my Dad only bought Volkswagens (several Bugs, a Bus & a Ghia) until he bought a 1980 VW Rabbit, which was a pile of miserable reliability and (suddenly) lousy dealer service. He never went back. The engine always lost coolant from day 1 and we found out from the guy who bought the Rabbit that there were nuts/bolts missing from the cylinder head and the result was antifreeze being introduced into the combustion cycle. I had to kick the fusebox to make the headlights & radio work. It seems that VW really hasn't changed since that time by what I read here at Carsurvey.

I love my '66 Bug however, it's been in the family since new and I know all of it's systems by heart. She's still fun to drive!
