"A bad, expensive experience"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

When we bought it 7 months ago we put about 3000$ into it, repairing:

the oil pan

engine mounts

steering column

i forget what else. a big long list, anyways.

A few months later we were driving on the highway and a wheel came right off. tire, hub, all of it. the wheel went bouncing off into a field. that cost a lot to repair.

Yesterday it made a noise and quit. the intermediate shaft broke and cracked the engine.

This car, when I average out all the costs (not including oil, which it drank and fuel, which it was great on) has cost us 1500$ a month.

General comments?

Vw diesels are supposed to be cheap & dependable. this has not been my experience.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I heard the 1993-98 1.9L VW diesels had crankshaft problems, hence your problems. I heard the older 1.6L engine is better (around 1985-92). Good luck finding one in good shape though.
