2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLX review from Germany
"The only fix for this car is to stick a rag in the gas tank and set in on fire"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Computer display shot
Brakes "bump" when applied and not very effective
Glove box broken
Interior door handle broken
Rattling valves
Check engine light always on
Faulty transmission
Heated mirrors... not so much heated
Poor service.
General comments?
When I test drove this car, everything was great. It ran great, rode great and all the amenities were awesome. Then, as soon as I put down some money and drove it off of the lot it took literally 2 miles before the transmission started shifting sporadically. We drove it straight to the VW dealership who took a week to replace some sensors on the transmission. When I got the car back, it shifted fine but the computer display and radio had stopped working. Also, a day later the transmission went out again for the same problem. The dealership (a used car dealer) had a tow truck pick up the car and take it back to the dealership. 2 weeks later they said that the transmission was fixed again. I asked "what about the radio and computer"? They looked at me, scratched their heads, looked at the fuses and then said they didn't know what the problem was. Maybe, it was the radio that was causing it. I asked about the computer and they said the dimmer was turned down. Now, I don't know much about cars but I know enough to know that there is no dimmer for the computer display. Then, they said again "I don't know". Okay, well, I can live without it. I drove the car off of the lot and about 10 miles down the road the check engine light came back on. I also noticed that the engine valves were rattling and there was a strange ticking in the engine. Also, the brakes would "bump" when applied. Once again, I brought the car back. Another 3 days later they said that there was a sensor for the brake lights that went bad and that it was good now. I asked about the valves and brakes and they said that they didn't notice anything!!! Well, I drove the car out and 20 miles down the road the light came back on. The car is still under warranty from the used car dealership and I hope it blows up soon so I can get another one. This is by far the worst car I have ever owned and would NEVER buy another VW nor would I recommend one.
