2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS review from North America
"High performance German nightmare"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Cup holder in the front jammed closed.
The ‘ashtray’ in the back would never click and stay closed, top cover broke off.
Check engine light came on in 05/01. The diagnosis was a faulty MAF sensor. Paid to have it repaired. Happened again and was covered under the warranty.
Burns oil like crazy.
Dealer stripped the oil pan and used and oversized plug to repair it. When the oversized plug stripped the pan no other option was available except to replace the pan.
The black cloth interior is a nightmare to clean, the fabric of the seats act like a lint brush.
The automatic shift lock (that makes you depress the brake to get the car out of park or neutral) failed causing me to not be able to get the car out of park to get it to the dealer, had to have it towed.
Latest thing is a blew a spark plug out of the head, bringing the threads with it. Dealer claims that because the 40k tune up was not performed that this would have been prevented and therefore not covered under warranty (apparently the plug was loosening up and backed its way out enough to blow out).
General comments?
Initially I was very pleased with the car. Drove well, handled great, looks great. Then it started to brake down piece by piece until finally the spark plug issue happened. At this point I just want the car gone. I wouldn't own another VW if you paid me.
