1989 Volkswagen Jetta GL review from North America

"Reliable, efficient, fun car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Tends to overheat if left idling too long.

Installing a block heater was rather difficult as frost plugs are in an inaccessible location.

General comments?

This is my first car, I did a lot of research on this site and the internet before choosing to buy a Jetta. It's taken me on a few great roadtrips and has never failed me. The only problem I've found is that when stuck in downtown L.A. traffic and the car is idling the temperature tends to run a bit high. However the car handles snow wonderfully, and the the heater works great.

While some people find the door handles difficult to operate on my car, after a few uses I neve have a problem with them. This model has a sunroof which has never leaked, and the seals show no sign of deterioration.

The only problem I'm having with it currently is that the coolant leaks. I suspect the problem is due to the fact that some well-meaning person, who noticed the level was approaching the min mark, deciced to top it up with tractor antifreeze. The radiator reservoir specifies only phosphate free antifreezes, so I warn others not to make the same mistake.

Also, I'm 6'3 and this car is slightly too short for me, however by adjusting the tilt of the seat and the reclining knob I'm able to make due. The car also has no forward cupholders. Though just last week I discovered a hidden armrest/compartment in the back seat that holds two beverages.

I worked out the gas efficiency a few months back. and usually get somewhere from 12 to 16 km per litre.

Also it has massive trunk space, on week long roadtrip to California last christmas we managed to bring all our own food and supplies and kept the back seat free for passengers.

Overall this car has given me hundreds of hours of reliable comfortable driving.

A good deal, if you know how to maintain it... and have a warranty!
