I agree, I have a 2002 Jetta VR6 and I LOVE IT!!!
I am a Saab or VWer for life. I love my 01 VW VR6; it's got all the bells and such on it. I love it and it loves me back.
I guess you have to take any car problem with a grain of salt.
It's called an investment; some times they're good, and other times they're not. Get over it and walk if you don't like it. And there is always public transport.
I have a 2000 Jetta VR6 and it has been a disappointment. Same window problems, transmission problems, multiple sensors going bad.
The worst problem is poor service at my local Volkswagen dealer.
A Ford Taurus is a better car than any Volkswagen. My Ford Taurus has 134000 miles, and I have replaced the alternator, heater/air conditioning fan motor.
DO NOT BUY A VOLKSWAGEN. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT RIPS YOU OFF AND THE PARTS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.
My father recently bought a 2001 Jetta VR6 and he absolutely loves it! Maybe the original owner fixed all of the problems most of these posts address?
My first car was a 79 VW Rabbit, and I thought that car was awesome! Since, I have owned 3 differents VWs. I would buy another VW if it wasn't for the fact that I discovered Jeeps, lifts, big tires, and mud!
Good luck to all of you still having trouble with your VWs. I took care of mine and they took care of me!

Hmm... I have a 2001 Jetta VR6 with almost 120,000 and I have no problems, besides wheel hop from the stock dogbone, I still have the original clutch and I drive VERY aggressively. I absolutely love the car, best one I've owned.
Well lets see, I have a 2002 Jetta VR6 24v, and yeah the ride's nice, but I should have gone with my BMW with the cost to fix things for this one.
I've done my 80000 mile service and still have the problems I've been having. I'm going to get a damn truck.
You know, being a mechanic, and knowing a little bit about VW's, I have to say that most of the experiences that are bad from people, come from those who have a VW, and take it to..
A) The dealership
or
B) A regular car mechanic.
Both of which, in general, SUCK!!! The dealership will always ruin the experience if they are crooked and are always advertising on TV the great deals they have. The mechanic usually has no idea what he's talking about because, admittedly, VW's are quite different than your typical Honda or Toyota. Now I don't bash either one (okay I hate Honda's), but I don't discredit either one for being good cars, but I also know that Honda's are generally much better for service at dealerships as well as Toyotas. VW dealers are, to say the least, really dumb and scam artists. Not saying everyone, but, most people I've seen that are displeased with their VW's, have a bad experience with a dealer.
Referring to VW's, I've had an 03' and 02' Jetta, an 01' Passat, and a Scirocco. The Scirocco had 490K when it went to the scrapyard, the Passat just turned 77K and needed a little bit of work on the head. The 03' Jetta was flawless and the 02' has turned 80K and seems to be doing just fine. I admit, I didn't like my 03' Jetta 2.0 that much, but the 02' has been alright.
Alright, many people complain about tranny problems. Now VW says they have a lifetime fluid and that the tranny is sealed. Total Bull****. The fluid sucks (Pentosian) maybe lasting 20K at the most, and the transmission is not sealed, it's rather easy to fill up and drain. Trust me, draining and refilling your VW tranny is going to save it, just like you'd expect. Whoever thought a lifetime fluid was a good idea was a idiot, I'll give you that.
Also, the window regulator, no big deal. Try owning a Suzuki Verona with 400 miles on the clock and a faulty ECU and a fried transmission. The window regulator is really easy to fix.
All the other stuff too; ignition coil, sensors, etc, they are all really easy to fix. The shops just love to eat you for lunch because of it. As a mechanic, I know the cars aren't bulletproof, but seriously, they are a heck of a lot nicer to drive and use than any regular compact car, so, I'd definitely use my Jetta any time over the stupid 4 banger Stratus I used to drive.
Wow, I just bought a 2001 Jetta VR6 GLX and wondering if I made a good investment. I really do hope the previous owner fixed all the major problems so I won't have that to worry about. I'm so sorry for everyone's misfortune. Good luck in the future. Please e-mail with comments.

For the person who spent so much replacing their cat at under the 8 year 80k law, you were still covered by VW.
