1990 Volkswagen Jetta GL review from North America

"Great fun, reliable, stylish, German car which unfortunately needs constant attention"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rebuilt alternator 165K.

Starter replaced 146K.

Rear and middle mufflers replaced 170-180K.

Cam cover seal replaced twice.

Major and minor brake jobs done 160-190K.

Replaced both outer CV boots.

Replaced clutch 170K.

Replaced rear wheel bearings.

Replaced shocks and struts at 170K.

Major transmission rebuild at 170K

inc. new bearings, seals, reverse gear, main engine seal and diff. seals.

Replaced as necessary the usual overpriced imported plastic switches, valves, hoses and lamps as necessary.

General comments?

I bought this car without knowing its previous history, but it appeared to be neglected (student driver)

I like to keep on top of things and fixed every rattle, hesitation, old part or cosmetic issue.

I probably spent as much fixing the car as I originally paid for it. (2.5 yrs. and 50000 km later)

Man it looks good and I intend to sell it that way.

The only time it left me stranded is when the alternator failed to charge the battery.

Handling is pretty good. The only problem is that the front wheels tend to plow a bit under stress which leads to front end drift on wet/snowy roads.

Have to rev it at 3500 rpm plus to get the power out of the little four, but when it's just you and no cargo, its got some jam.

Funny thing, after all the repairs I'm searching for a 1992 Turbo Diesel because I like to drive VW.

Bit of advice, try and find a reputable back yard mechanic for most of your repairs as the only thing you need the Dealer for are specific parts and engine diagnostics.
