1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS review from North America

"A disappointment"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Where to begin:

Driver's side, side view mirror heater went on me just about when the warranty went. Figured it was a convenience, so not really too worried.

The glove compartment door latch broke at 40k.

Both front windows broke and fell into the door frame within 10k miles of each other. Was okay with it until the service center at the dealership I purchased it dismissed me when I asked for assistance with the car as I needed to have them at least prop it up for a road trip I was about to take. Too boot, the weather was horrible. Couldn't go on the road trip. Somewhat annoyed with that. I made a complaint to VW Corporate and I was told to deal directly with the dealer.

After getting a full tune-up by a reputable mechanic (that I have used for years) the engine light went on. At the time I was on another road trip and had to get the problem fixed at a remote VW dealer. I was told that I needed a, bear with me, "a tune-up". I find out later the light coming on was a O2 misfire recall". I again, inform VW corporate with proper documentation of my complaint. I get the same response as before.

Power locks work intermittently. Leaks some nasty grease on the side doors.

The honeymoon was over after 10k miles.

General comments?

If you're going to get a German car go with Mercedes and/or BMW. It may seem expensive, but you'll end up spending the same money bit in repairs.

The 89 Jetta was awesome and cheap to drive and rarely faltered. Too bad about the one I spent so much more.
