What things have gone wrong with the car?

The most recent thing that has gone wrong with my 2000 GLS Jetta VR6 is that the engine light keeps coming on. On June 9,2003 took the car in to dealer because engine light was on and I was about to go on a business road trip. I was told that it was probably because I did not put the gas cap on properly. I left the car and was told there was a problem with the coolant temp sensor and was replaced for $111.89.

Today July 17th the enginelight is back on and I have taken the car back to the dealer and I was told that it is the Mass Air Flow.

I took the car to my old mechanic and he took a look and tried to get a reading, but because VW dealer cleared the code for the so called MAF, my mechanic could not give me his diagnostics and suggested that I come back when the light is back on.

I called VW dealer and Rep/Mechanic had confirm that yes, they did indeed clear the code and they informed me that the engine light will probably come back on in a couple of days or so.

Prior to the engine light coming on, I really did not realize how many things had gone wrong with my Jetta. Until I found this website and started reading other complanints and concerns.

Here is a list of prior things that have happened.

Mirror switch broke off, when adjusting mirror.

Rear breaks had to be replaced about 18,000miles

Front seats do not really heat up, very mild more like luke warm.

Problems with sun roof opening and closing.

Yellow wax oozing underneath doors when hot.

Broken Arm Rest catch & peeling

Right (passanger) window would not go down.

Cup holder in front broken.

The sad thing is that this is a great performance and great gas mileage car.

I can't wait to see what the VW dealer has to say when I take the care back in after I get a second opinion.

Oh yea! the Representative that was originaly helpiing me never once said that the Mass Air Flow was under warranty. It was just a gut feeling and I called back in and spoke with another Rep who had helped me in the past and they confirmed that the MAF was just recently extended to a 7yr or 70,000 mile warranty in California. So make sure you check your warranties and recalls!!! There are several coverages under the 7yr/70.000miles such as Catalytic convertor, intake manifold, transmission control, just to name a few, I believe is varies from state to state, worth looking into.!!

Waiting for the engine light to come back on so I can get my second opinion from a very trust worthy and compentant mechanic.

General comments?

Too bad all these little things are adding up! Maybe it's time to look at the Porsche Caynne!! and get rid of my Jetta before something else goes wrong, hopefully not!!!

The check engine light is probably due to a bad "breather element". Kind'a like the old and still current PVC valve.
