2000 Volkswagen Jetta GL from North America - Comments

"Could have twice the car for half the money"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

New brakes before 25,000 miles thank god due to the horrible brake dust.

Even water on the seats causes a look of a stain. I clean the seats on a regular basis and if I happen to go back and touch up a spot, it now leaves a ring due to not drying at the same time as the rest of the seats.

New tires before 25,000 miles! What a great surprise that was possibly the cheapest tires by good-year.

While still under warranty the engine light came on. This happened at the same time as winter, when I had changed my oil and notices EXCESSIVE moisture in my oil pan. brought this up to the service department and I was told that the moisture is due to the engine running hot and the weather being cold. I can assume this is true for ALL vehicles, I also am aware of the dangers of moisture in your engine. however didn't seem to be of any interest to the service manager. 1 year later recall on oxygen censor-which causes moisture in the engine oil???

Trunk opens whenever I turn the car off.

Glove box hinge broken.

General comments?

I was a previous owner of a Ford Explorer and purchased the Jetta to get the car I've always LOVED! I am greatly unhappy and have warned all others. Unfortunately this will be the first and last volkswagen I will ever own.

I have a 2000 Jetta GLS and have had the exact problems! New tires at 30k miles, Glove box hinge broken, Oxygen sensor failed causing steady check engine light and the engine to run rich where I failed the smog check. Both front window regulators failed. Thankfully the oxygen sensor and regulators were recalled and have been fixed. In addition to the above I have two power lock actuators that have failed. On one the dealer comped the replacement the other is for me to do. $145 per actuator is the cost before labor! I will say this much, Volkswagen USA has been real helpful in addressing the warrantied defects, but that is as far as it goes. All in all, I regret buying this Jetta. It has become a money pit.
