OK I disagree with you people who hate it. I have a 2000 GLS VR6 with 120k. I run the crap out of mine and it sees strip and track time.
My engine is upped with a cai cams, headers, pulleys and what not, but still that makes no difference.
I have had problems like right now my cats clogged. To make it even better I not only own a Jetta, but work as a mechanic. First off it's a generally no matter the make of your vehicle or country of origin, the dealer's gonna rip you an arm and a leg. I rarely send customers to the dealer unless that's the only place (if you've been told your warranty will be void if you take your car for repairs and maintenance anywhere else, it's BS. The Magnuson-Moss act or something like that states that they cannot bar your warranty for that, and that if they wanna be that anal about it, they have to give you the parts like filters oil and whatnot for free to take to the other shop with you.
To whoever was complaining that their brakes only lasted 30k; not bad, mine last about 15k and I run ceramics. Your driving style can and will effect many areas of your vehicle.
My final opinion on this car is though it may have its issues and quirks, so does everything else (trust me). These are very nice cars; performance, comfort and efficiency. That being said, I leave you with 2 things to ponder on. If you want cheaper expenses on your vehicle, go buy a ricer, and it's called preventive maintenance for a reason.
