1999 Volkswagen Jetta review from North America

Carbon build up in throttle body and intake manifold.

Sun roof came off track and would not function.

Relay malfunction caused stall on freeway. Car would just die while driving.

Carbon build up again.

Air mass flow component failure. Very expensive to replace. 580.00 dollars.

Throttle body shut off vale broke plastic stem. Dealer says I have to buy 350.00 Dollar throttle body to replace a five dollar valve. Will not sell them separately.

Glow plug harness has gone to ground 280.00 dollars to repair.

Glow plugs bad. $50.00 each plus labor.

Timing belt slipped while slowing down to turn into drive way. Bent valve stems and lifters. $1.200.00 to repair.

Turbo charger is worn out. $850.00 for a re manufactured turbo plus labor to put it in.

Jockey box hinge broke. Fixed with JB weld as its expensive to replace.

Defoggers would not work. Service tech said they would have to take dash out to get to levers. I found that the filter for air coming to heater was choked full of black carbon composite. Have no Idea where that came from.

First set of tires worn out at 25000 miles so I bought new tires of quality and they have about 80000 and still show good tread.

Lost electronic keys each key is $360.00 to replace.

I have had used cars all my life and have never had so much problem as I have with our new Jetta. I will never buy another Volkswagen.

We really like it when we first bought it and I took excellent care of this car and did not abuse it. I don't trust it on a long trip and will trade it off even though the trade in is not what it should be.

I'm very disappointed in this car and strongly suggest that others do not buy any TDI's.
