2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS review from North America
"I will never buy a Volkswagen again!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced nearly all components of the emissions system, some were under warranty, some not.
2 defective O2 sensors.
MAF sensor stopped working (VW has offered to pay for this repair)
Replaced ignition coil pack due to cracks.
Finally, replaced clogged catalytic converter - most likely due
to all of the other emissions components problems.
Suffer from "second gear grind" problem - if not careful shifting into 2nd.
Ripped off front bumper on a parking beam.
Trunk lamp or trunk dashboard indicator does not work.
Air conditioner valve needed to be replaced after having car for about a month.
Replaced winshield 3 times! I am convinced that this has less to do with highway stones hitting it than a design that cannot withstand the stone hit stress.
Radio and CD changer works intermittently, especially when "cold"
Roof antenna stolen due to thief-friendly "screw-in" design.
Door lubricant leaking from under door staining the rocker panel.
Turn signals and hazard warning lights operate correctly only if left on briefly. The "blink rate" gradually slows and eventually the signal lamp "freezes" on after about a minute of use.
Braking power is significantly reduced in the rain - more than what I would consider "normal"
Musty smell emanating from ventilation system.
General comments?
I will absolutely never buy a Volkswagen again.
I have been very successful in convincing many of my friends and of them have been loyal VW owners in the past!
Have dealt with dealers in PA and MD. family to never buy a Volkswagen. Some Both are equally horrible. Typically takes 3 weeks to schedule appointments. They always act "surprised" when you describe your problem, even though from reading these boards it appears that all VW owners are having the same problems.
No one, but a dealer can work on this car due to the diagnostic equipment necessary. Auto manufacturers were supposed to "standardize" their diagnostic computer systems, however VW has nulled this effort by inserting numerous "custom" codes into their computers.
