I've replaced the entire ignition system, including distributor and ICU.
Replaced ICV.
Replaced the brakes.
Tear in driver's seat.
Replaced CV joint.
Body rusted all over, major rust around windshield seal.
Valve cover gasket replaced, but still didn't repair the leak.
Shift linkage broke.
Clutch cable broke.
Knock sensor disintegrated.
This car is junk. All of the above repairs were done in the ONE year that I've owned it. I've paid far more in repairs that I paid for the car. And that's with me doing the repairs myself.
The digifant system is garbage. It's totally unreliable and extremely finnicky.
This jetta has left me on the side of the road on several occasions and I would never trust it on trips outside of the city.
I won't buy another Volkswagen.
Hmmm...your car is 15 years old... what do you expect? Besides, it is a used car. How do you know that the person who owned it before you didn't beat on it!
While yes, the problems with the ignition system are VERY annoying, overall, this is a good car. I've never had to replace anything besides the starter, tires, and exhaust in the whole time I've had the car. that's pretty impressive considering the car has over 215,000miles on it. Overall, this car is very dependable and if properly taken car of, will last a very long time.
The Jetta does have a Sucking Problem. I have had what was told 2 me a great car and long lasting yet the tranny is starting 2 slip, then electronics have gone out more time in the past 3 months then a car should in a year. I also baby the car.
I have a 1989 Volkswagen Jetta GL 8valve, and it has 350,000 miles on it, and the only thing I have had to replace major was the timing belt at 200,000 miles, and the car is a 5 speed, so that is amazing clutch and transmission life!!!
I have owned it since new. The only thing that annoyed me was an idle problem that took a year for my local dealership to figure out with help from Wolfsburg. But that was under warranty.
Also I have owned many mk2 Jettas. I currently have two and all have been greatly reliable. Much more so than any of my newer Volkswagens and BMWs..
