"Great car, no major problems, but as it gets older watch out! Problems can start and get expensive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Rear window regulator does not work

cruise control works half of the time

catalytic converter went out

delayed wipers work sporadically

seats fade badly

door moldings come loose and are hard to find anything that will adhere to them to make them stay on the car.

General comments?

The car has not been a matinence nightmare like I have read on this sight. I have had only minor problems. The power is good and the car is quick and responsive. The car handles well, and is very fun to drive. I enjoy all of the extras that the wolfsburg edition offers, power moonroof,6 disc changer, power windows and locks, plus cruise control. The car looks great, but I wish the ride was a little more comportable at times, going over bumps in the road sounds like the front end is going to fall off. The biggest complaint is the catalytic converter which went out after 80,000 miles, it would have been taken care of under warranty if I it would have went out before 80k, but no such luck. The catalytic converter is very noisy and there has been signigficant power loss.

To sum it up the car has been very reliable for me, no major trips to the shop, I am worried though as I put more miles on the car that is when VWs start to have problems, I have owned several VWs and this seems to be the case with all of them, when this starts to happens, get rid of it, it can get quite expenxsive to maintain.

I am the author of the firts review. I have had some problems with the jetta. The catalytic converter did not go out, it turned out to be the muffler, I took it to the dealer who said it was the catalytic converter and the heat shield making noise. It would not be replaced under warranty. I took it my car to a local VW repair shop. The noise was the muffler and was fixed at a cost of $148 dollars. Cheaper than $800 for the catalytic converter at the VW dealer which was not the problem. I have had some trouble with the check engine light. On hot days it comes on and then turns itself off. The a/c did not get cold on one day and then started to get cold the next. I think it is related to something going wrong with the starter. I also have noticed that the rubber around the antenna is starting to disengrate. Other than that the car is still running great. I have not had the rear window fixed, It is to expensive. I still get good gas mileage, last I checked I was getting 35mpg.

I also own a 1999 Jetta Wolfsburg. I had my first window regulator go this month. I ordered a new one today and it was not expensive as everyone is reporting. It cost me $118 dollars CDN. FYI It is the old style Jetta; the new one costs $150. I also have had a check engine light problem; its been in the shop four times for this and is still on. The seal around the antennae is also disintegrating, but I am not too concerned about it. Other than that no unusual problems.

I too have a 1999 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edtn. that I picked up around a year ago. Unfortunately, for me, I have had both rear window regulators and motors fail. Costs were pretty high. However, I was able to split the cost with the dealer that I bought it from.

Now, it appears that I have an issue with my muffler and possibly more. Hopefully, the rattle has nothing to do with the catalytic converter... because the dealers are quoting $1000 to $1500CDN. Wish me luck!

I just got a 99 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. It has about 89k miles on it.

So far the only problems I have had are:

Passenger side rear window will not roll up or down, you can hear a clicking noise when you try to roll it down.

One day it just rolled down by itself and I was able to roll it back up with the switch in the front. (I haven't touched it since)

The lights for the AC/Heat do not work, but will come on for a little while if you hit the dash a few times. We checked the connections and didn't find anything, but I plan to clean the connectors just in case.

The Cruise Control does not work. Very disappointing since it would help me avoid speeding tickets :)

I plan to get a quote on what it will cost to fix the CC soon and decide from there if it is worth it.

The engine has a small oil leak that you can smell after running the car for an hour or more. My mechanic friend looked at it and said it is probably just a $15 seal that he would help me replace for a very small fee.

I am enjoying the car so far and like the way it handles and the gas mileage. The 6 disc CD changer isn't bad either. I hope I still feel the same way in a year. This is my first VW. My previous cars have mostly been Toyotas until this one.
