2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 review from North America
"Not worth the hassle anymore"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Well, what hasent gone wrong with it. All lot of the items listed by other people sre no different with my car. OK here it is. The arm rest clip busted very early on. The liscence plate holder in the front kept commining off. My shifter knob came off on me. It kept popping out and up. I had to get the alternator replaced. It was bad from day 1. Kepp in mind that I bought this car brand new. It's a 2000 VR6 that is five years old with only 52000 km's on it. Anyway I shall continue. So the alternator was bad from day 1. I took it in at around 10000km on it, still under warranty. The dealer said nothing was wrong. The lights would flicker and get brighter as I idled. This problem persisted. Just before my warranty was about to be up, I took it in again to VW and told them to check it again. They came back and said, good thing you brought it in, your alternator is defective and it was overcharging all my electrice. I could have killed them all. So they fixed it under warranty. The next thing to go, just after my warranty was one of my coil ignition assemblies. IThey wanted to charge me amost $700 to fix it. Needless to say I wasnt pleased. The dealer would not honour the warranty even though it had just passed the two years, but it was well under the 40000km. So I complained to VW Canada and after a few days they finally got back to me and said they would pay for %75 of the parts costs. That made it a little better. It still ended up costing me about $300. Next my driver side window regulator went on me. I drove 4 days before they could get me in to fix it. Lucily I avoided the rain. Last, but not least. I am having intermitent problems getting into second gear. It's grinding about 4-5 times a week. I'ts deffinately not my driving. At first I though I was to quick on the shift and clutch, but have concluded that its not that. All the other gears seem to be fine, downshifting is fine. Only from first to second is bad. The dealership took it for a test drive and found nothing wrong. Figures the minuite I drive away it did it again. Their advice to me was, thake it ito an independent transmission shop. Nothing like a vote of confidence from your local VW dealer. Anyway, I am in the process of looking for a new car. I can't take this anymore. It's a shame, case the car has a lot of nice features. Next stop, back to toyota where I should have stayed. I guess the Mexican built German car isin't the same as the Jetta's of the past that were built in Germany.
General comments?
Many good features, but too many problems.
