Well, what hasent gone wrong with it. All lot of the items listed by other people sre no different with my car. OK here it is. The arm rest clip busted very early on. The liscence plate holder in the front kept commining off. My shifter knob came off on me. It kept popping out and up. I had to get the alternator replaced. It was bad from day 1. Kepp in mind that I bought this car brand new. It's a 2000 VR6 that is five years old with only 52000 km's on it. Anyway I shall continue. So the alternator was bad from day 1. I took it in at around 10000km on it, still under warranty. The dealer said nothing was wrong. The lights would flicker and get brighter as I idled. This problem persisted. Just before my warranty was about to be up, I took it in again to VW and told them to check it again. They came back and said, good thing you brought it in, your alternator is defective and it was overcharging all my electrice. I could have killed them all. So they fixed it under warranty. The next thing to go, just after my warranty was one of my coil ignition assemblies. IThey wanted to charge me amost $700 to fix it. Needless to say I wasnt pleased. The dealer would not honour the warranty even though it had just passed the two years, but it was well under the 40000km. So I complained to VW Canada and after a few days they finally got back to me and said they would pay for %75 of the parts costs. That made it a little better. It still ended up costing me about $300. Next my driver side window regulator went on me. I drove 4 days before they could get me in to fix it. Lucily I avoided the rain. Last, but not least. I am having intermitent problems getting into second gear. It's grinding about 4-5 times a week. I'ts deffinately not my driving. At first I though I was to quick on the shift and clutch, but have concluded that its not that. All the other gears seem to be fine, downshifting is fine. Only from first to second is bad. The dealership took it for a test drive and found nothing wrong. Figures the minuite I drive away it did it again. Their advice to me was, thake it ito an independent transmission shop. Nothing like a vote of confidence from your local VW dealer. Anyway, I am in the process of looking for a new car. I can't take this anymore. It's a shame, case the car has a lot of nice features. Next stop, back to toyota where I should have stayed. I guess the Mexican built German car isin't the same as the Jetta's of the past that were built in Germany.
Many good features, but too many problems.
Finally I have heard someone else complaining about the intermittent grinding 1st to 2nd gears!!! I have taken my car (2000 Jetta GLS 1.8T) to the dealer at least 4 times over the 5 years I have owned the car, but all I get is the same answer of 'we road tested it, but can't find anything wrong'. Anyway, after 5 years and a series of minor breakages (all of which are listed elsewhere on this site) I'm going to get rid of it. Time to return to Japanese engineering!
My 2000 Jetta VR6 also grinds going into second gear, and only second... never happens when they road test it though, and they have never found the problem. It has done it since it was brand new. It's a shame when you spend the extra for a zippier engine and you have to hear that horrible sound. Anyone who buys a VR6 is clearly after top notch performance and the handling. I won't lie, it hugs the curves... but that sound kills me a little more inside each time. Never again... saving for a beamer.
The grinding is because VW does not want you to SLAM from 1st gear to second to prevent transmission problems. when I take off in 1st gear and tack it out, I do not try to slam it into 2nd, I pause for about a second then shift, and no noise. hope this helps.
NO one is "Slamming" their car into second, they are simply shifting as you would expect to shift in ANY decent car. Stop making excuses for VW. Face it, VW SUCKS!!!
If you want a good VW, buy one built before 1990. I had a 1989 GTI 16v that I sold at 260,000 miles and it STILL ran strong when I sold it!! VW Don't make 'em like they use to!!
If you want a reliable car today (2007) you might as well just buy a Honda or Toyota.
Yea, my 2000 vr 6 hss been a headache. I bought it in march and man am I glad I got the extended warranty. first the brakes went out within the first week. then the transmission had to be replaced. I drove from denver to philly and the timing belt broke and ruined the teeth in the engine I guess. anyway, if you want a great extended warranty get the driver z edge. they paid for everything!
Yeah I've had problems going to second too.
But after I chopped the shifter down an inch and a half, it hasn't done it.
I don't know why?
