1998 Volkswagen Jetta GLS from North America - Comments

"I love my Jetta, but wish there weren't so many problems"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Well, the passenger side window will not go up or down unless the defrost light is blinking.

The coolant continuously leaks and I am looking at a two hundred fifty dollar repair for that.

The ignition has issues: it locked my key in the ignition and would not come out. That was a two hundred dollar bill for simply removing the key. I haven't even had the problem really fixed yet.

The paint on the door handles is worn off.

The miles per gallon ratio is not that great, it ends up being about 18 mpg.

The RPM's jump all over the place when driving. When accelerating, the car will go from 3000 rpm's to 5000 rpm's and fluctuate around that area.

General comments?

The air conditioning still works great.

The heat works great and I love the sun roof.

The window problems won't bother me until one falls through or something.

It's a very comfortable car with nice interior features.

I own a 97 jetta gls it is a excellent car however there are many little problems that I have fixed. Me being a mechanic makes it a lot easier, but someone who is not I can see how much a jetta would cost to fix. Many people I talk to have the same problems with their jettas. Window regulators, electrical problems, poor cosmetic parts. however many of these problems are very simple to fix. The window regulators go bad on the passenger side more than the drivers side this is probably the biggest problem the window regulators new are over $300 used about $100 and for the average person are not very easy to put in. Almost 100 percent of the electrical problems are due to the doors when you open and close them the wires bend and eventually break apart this can cause many strange electrical problems so check it out if you have this problem it can be fixed with regular butt connectors you will be surprised what doing this will fix. The cosmetic parts can also be fixed easily depending on what it is my jetta had the moldings falling off to fix it I cleaned them up with a razor and used 3m tape to put them back on they have been on for a year with no problem. Don't give up on your jetta once you get the kinks out they will go a long way. Good luck.
