1994 Volkswagen Jetta III GLX VR6 review from North America
"Reliably quick and luxurious for a college kid with a so-so deep pocket"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Dash lights stopped working, unable to fix without replacing entire dash circuitry.
Brake light switch replaced.
Power window on pass. rear side stopped working.
Intake boot broke. Replaced.
Injection pump tube to air cleaner broke. Replaced.
Recall on fan blade and some kind of Grommet.
All windows occasionally have spouts of intermittent use of only 3" either way per push of button. Suspected window motor. To expensive to replace.
123000 miles Replaced oil cooler seals due to leaks.
Car misfiring. Replaced ignition coil pack.
Locked out of car. Went in through trunk. started car and alarm sounded. Ever since alarm has not worked properly and doors will occasionally lock when opened and closed.
Drivers side rear window grommet broke while using and had window fixed into place like its other fellow rear window due to cost to replacing peace.
Sway bar linkage pass. front broke. Replaced.
Rust has become a factor due to holes under drivers/passenger side floor along with hole on top of drivers side taillight that leads into trunk. Holes also developing inside trunk in the rear.
General comments?
The car itself has a very nice leather interior and when the heated seats seem to work it is a very nice car to drive during Michigan winters. Heater works nicely to defrost also.
Speed is right up there with the mustang GT who was surprised to still see me in his passenger window until about 70mph when his horsepower kicked in.
Handles great with a nice soft set of low profile tires in the summer and a solid 195/55R15 in the winter.
I bought this car right after high school and now after almost five years of owning the car and about $3000 in parts and labor to the dealership and routine maintenance such as brake work The most important thing that I have learned is that this car is fairly easy to work on if you have some sense, the right tools (which might cost an arm and a leg, whats new), a repair manual and Internet access. So if you own this vehicle, don't let the VW logo scare you into the dealership. Its attainable to do your own work.
