2007 Volkswagen Passat TDI review from UK and Ireland
"Overpriced, over-rated, poor build quality and unreliable"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Electrical reliability have been an issue. In particular, electric windows operate intermittently, central locking occasionally fails to lock the car, electric mirrors don't always adjust without a helping finger etc.
2.0 TDI engine has suffered various minor problems and been back into the dealers on several occasions. Main problem seems to involve the exhaust gas valve, which started sticking after about 6 months. Has eventually been replaced by the dealers after much wrangling and argument.
Had various problems with a misfire at motorway speeds. Several software updates and eventually the ECU replaced have finally solved the problem. (But only after lots of complaints and 3 visits to the dealer.)
Persistent pull to the left from the steering - dealers have still failed to rectify this.
ABS module replaced after warning light came on (I understand that this part is virtually £1,000)
Parking brake switch broke - replaced under warranty. This appears to be a common fault as the dealer had the part in stock.
Brake judder finally cured after replacing brake discs and pads -- according to the dealer my fault for braking too hard! More arguments with dealer.
Drivers seat base creaks. Rattles from doors and under passenger side dash.
General comments?
Looks great and drives well - when it works.
Has spent far too much time in with unhelpful dealers who usually don't have parts in stock. Have tried 3 dealers in the area and they have varied from polite but useless, to uncooperative and near rude.
Fuel consumption generally good except when exhaust valve goes wrong.
Traded "up" from a Mondeo to this but the Mondeo was much more reliable and actually drove better.
Very disappointed with the build quality and number of faults experienced.
After using it for a while, I don't like the electric parking brake, which has occasionally caused the car to hesitate on acceleration from rest.
This car does not inspire me with confidence and I am looking forward to the lease finishing so I can get rid of it.
