1987 Volkswagen Polo review from UK and Ireland
"Easy to maintain first car!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Driver side rear drum failed, due to a collapsed slave cylinder - resulting in a collision with a wall.
Pier-burg carburettor has packed in, causing the car to feel like it's being driven by a kangaroo.
Front wheel bearings replaced, but what can you expect at 125,000 miles?
General comments?
Fantastic little car that personifies German engineering, simple and sturdy. A great first car for those who like to do their own servicing.
However... If you buy a 1.05 post 1986 vehicle I advise you to rip out the old pierburg carb and replace it with the older solex one (making sure that you take the special wiring) as the pierburg carb is useless.
Also, if you do your own servicing pay very close attention to the condition of every component of the brakes - the slave cylinder in mine disintegrated causing the car to pivot around the back left wheel and crunch - ended up in a wall with a badly damaged wing.
That's the other thing about these cars - so easy and cheap to repair - got a replacement wing - in the same color off a scrap yard and it only took me 20 minutes to change for the old one - held on by bolts not welds. Great car.
