Cambelt snapped. Oh dear, bent all the valves, should have changed it when I first brought the car, big mistake!! Had a new head put on from second hand car. All O.K. now.
Bodywork under the battery had rotted through, easy to repair.
The original seats were crap, drivers seat had worn very badly by the driver's door. Got a complete new interior from an accident write off for 45.00ukp (the better quality interior came in about 1986/87).
New drivers door window mechanism (bought original VW part, not too expensive surprisingly!!)
New petrol tank, old one developed a leak, again surprisingly not too expensive (not original VW).
Other minor things again not too expensive due to purchase from scrap yards or copy parts.
A great little car. It has done 137,000 miles and is still going strong. Bodywork is remarkable for the age. Brakes take a bit of getting used to due to there being no servo, however a bit of extra pressure and it will stop no problem. Seems as though it will go on forever with a bit of care and attention.
N.B. The driver's side seat tends to wear out on nearly ALL VW Polos I have seen of this age, I thing VW made them out of particularly cheap material, plus, the position of the steering wheel means you are constantly swivelling on the seat when you want to get in or out.
I had a 1985 vw polo for my first car and the seat went I loved the car, but I don't know why people seem to think they are so relible I now drive a 1991 nissian micra 1.2 and I think they are fab cars totaly diffrent to polos, but they always start 1st time unlike the polo and when your finishing work at 2 o clock in the morning this is what you need get a micra the mark 1.
Bought a 1987 VW Polo for my wife in July last year. Got it home and discovered it was a genuine 50000 mile car.
Drives like new; no rattles, no creaks, beats my 406.
Took it for an MOT and it failed on brake discs.
What an amazing little car. Have been offered a grand for it. It ain't going anywhere.
If VW build was like this 20 years ago, you will see a lot of new VW s running in 20 years time.
If you want a decent car, go for a VW.
