"A little beaut that will run and run"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Pierburg carb needed re tuning to pass Mot emmisions.

Worn brake lines replaced at 117000.

Bad interior water leak traced to slight shunt on left wing disturbing sealing at joint and allowing water in to the car by the glove box area.

Speedo and Tacho replaced at 110000 miles as both were faulty.

Other than that just usual stuff such as cables, cv boots, and tyres.

Battery box rusted out - fixed with fiber glass.

General comments?

A mates sister was desperate to sell the car before she went abroad for a year. Having owned a 1 litre hatch at the time I could not resist the purchase. 400 bells exchanged and a rare early comet blue metallic coupe s was mine. Having owned the car for a year now all I can say is what a gem. It goes well although only a 4 speed, its comfortable at 80mph at around 4200 revs. The car had been fitted with an extreme 70mm lowering kit when I bought it, I enjoyed this although the car could have no passengers- not even 1 front one! It eventually pissed me off though when I drove through a pothole last summer and put a nice dent in the floor pan. some sledgehammering and 200 od quid on replacing the standard suspension later she is now in fine fettle, and I plan to restore her fully when time and money allow. It is tempting to dream of fitting a G40 engine and uprating the chassis, getting it fully resprayed etc.. sadly this is pie in the sky for a piss poor student like me.

I agree totally with everything said, I too have a comet blue polo coupe (1984) and love it to bits, there are not that many around so its nice to see another one being looked after. I go to a lot of the VW shows so look out for me there.

Mk2 polo's are rapidly becoming a classic, so many of them get given up on because of minor problems when in fact they are really easy cars to work on, extremely reliable and cheap to run. There are now a few clubs for owners and fans of the polo including ClubPolo and Performance Polo's where you can learn about meets and chat about the mutual love of Polo's. So many people these days buy a car on its year or mileage, when it's a well known fact that this isn't an issue if you buy a VW. With a bit of tlc these cars will go on for a long time yet.

Mad Polo fan

These vehicles have to be THE cheapest form of motoring on the road. I have driven everything from a Morris Minor to an Audi Quattro. Every car was good at something and bad at others, but the Polo did what it did brilliantly. Find a cared-for example, even if it's over 20 years old (and there's plenty of them out there) and it will still be reliable cheap no-nonsense motoring for years to come. The only thing that wears these cars out is abuse. The only thing out there comparable is a 205. You pays yer money and takes yer choice.

The coupe S is really nice. I love it and I polish mine every week. What a nice model of car.

I have a mint Polo Coupe S. She's been fully resprayed and has a virtually brand new interior mint condition. I've had her for eight years. Oh yeah, it has a Dietrich kit front and back, including side skirts with G40 BBS alloys.
