1987 Volkswagen Polo Ranger review from UK and Ireland
"Buy a Golf instead!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Thermostat stuck shut at 125000 causing
head gasket blow.
Alternator failed at 130000.
Distributor failed at 130000ish.
Fuel pump failed about 130000ish.
Coil failed about 130000ish.
Ignition switch has broken and been replaced numerous times.
Wheel alignment (tracking) is disturbed extremely easily.
Rubbish brakes that lock up with a minimum amount of pressure.
Poor interior trim (rattles and squeaks).
Pier burg 2E3 carburettor was an absolute nightmare for icing.
Original suspension made the car like a boat.
Lots of corrosion occurs on exterior electrics.
Absolutely rubbish headlights.
Drinks petrol (and mine was well tuned!)
Petrol tank rusted around filler neck/tank body.
Track rod ball joints have both worn out.
Driver seat extremely worn out.
No rear leg room.
Extremely basic interior electrics.
Entire car is fragile. Don't treat it heavy-handedly or you will have a lot more to repair.
General comments?
What a nightmare!
You will have to learn a lot about car repair.
Buy this car if you're a glutton for punishment.
It will eat your money and still want more.
Still with it's original clutch though!
Simple mechanics that are easy, relatively cheap, but time consuming to repair.
Goes like hell if the engine is well maintained and tuned. But I don't think the performance is worth the effort!
