1989 Volkswagen Polo Coupe GT review from Spain
"Unstoppable and very reliable machine for EVERY use or place"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Original suspensions are too soft. I replaced them for a tougher ones which gave a safer driving feeling.
Little problems with carburetor that were quickly solved at a cheap cost.
General comments?
This car is wonderfully well made. Mine was built in one of the Volkswagen Spanish factories. It always kept going like a tank. When I first bought it, I could never imagine how good it was. Since three years ago, I made more than 40.000Km without NO major problems apart from the average maintenance. To set some examples : I drove it through mountains higher than 2.000 meters in winter, dirty roads, all kind of muddy places, sand, woods, etc. One winter I was the only tourism car that could get out from a very snowy road. Lots of 4x4 drivers were amazed of how such a little car could climb so high in isolated places. Another time I crossed a mud pool of 50cms deep during heavy rain and nothing happened! I made also some trips from Barcelona to Germany and back running more than 2.500kms in two days without even having to check the oil. It's a great car to make some madnesses with friends. It always starts at first, no matter if the weather is ice-cold or hot as hell. It's a perfect car for beginners or anyone who doesn't want to worry about it. The 1300cc engine is small and quiet, but incredibly strong and has some nerve. I reached speeds of 175Kms/h on highways overpassing much more expensive cars. You can travel at 145Kms/h without problems apart the of wind noise. The fuel consumption is optimal : 8-9 liters every 100Kms on city ; 6-7 liters on road and a bit more on highway. Trustworthy, cheap, low costs of maintenance, very funny and super well built. Unfortunately, I have to leave it after a crash against some rocks outside a twisty road in the country. Luckily, the rigid seats and belts kept me safe. Again, one of the cheapest and most reliable car you could ever buy. Very spacious also thanks to the rear seats can be easily folded, giving a remarkable inner space. However, make sure you get it in good condition. Some reparations such as carburetor can be expensive. If you get the right one and don't forget the basic maintenance, you got a car for life and a true classic also. Let's not forget that this model was first released on 1982! ;-) By the way, I strongly recommend the model with a FIVE speed gearbox. It makes a great difference.
