1995 Volkswagen Polo GL review from UK and Ireland
"Awesome car and performance"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Usual routine things such as lights etc. Nothing has really gone wrong with the car since I have had it, car looks mint seen as its 10 years old.
Oh, the gear knob was cracked when I got it, but I bought a new official VW polo knob and now it looks the part.
Athough it did develop a slight whirling noise, but I think that is the bearings which I was going to get sorted out.
General comments?
Best car I have driven to date, smart interior and looks (3 door, colour coded bumpers and wing mirrors) and performance to match. For a 75bhp car it really pulls its weight along, 0-60 in around 9 seconds when the car is warmed up. Would love to try the 16v 1.4 (100bhp) or the 16v 1.6 GTi polo! (125bhp)
Handling is not the best, but it makes up for it in acceleration once you get out of a tight corner. Jumping from a 1.1 Peugeot 106 to this was such a thrill at the time and even now the car still surprises me when you get a boy racer in a kitted saxo pulling up at the lights beside you and the look on his face when you blow him away!
Sadly, the car is with my insurance company at the moment, had a crash a couple of weeks ago. Another driver hit the passenger side wing at the traffic lights and totally smashed the side off. I miss the car (currently driving a Peugeot 306 while its being looked at) and hope they don't write it off.
Overall, this easy to drive, cheap insurance, fully loaded with power steering, electric windows/mirrors and excellent performance would be suitable for anyone with good taste. Fall in love with the unusual shape of the car and underneath you will see a car that lives up to its VW reputation. If it gets written off, I will miss her.
